Warde Manuel explains Georgia’s free-fall in latest CFP rankings update
Automatic bids totally destroy the notion that a national champ really is the best team. It's about TV revenue, not quality of the game. I wouldn't care if all twelve came from the same conference if the metrics showed them to be the best. Records are part of that process, but not completely.
Solid Bama fan here, but I'm not happy when Auburn is so bad. I don't want them to be the leaders of the SEC, but I do want all of the SEC teams to be credible and a challenge to all who play them. He needs to go.
Talking heads make lots of money off of being talking heads. They live for produced controversy. Almost like they get together on Saturday nights and discuss who will be the target of the week.
Understand the "stress" part. Four quarter games were a novelty for a while there! No more!
No kidding. Me too.
The best part of the complaining folks posting is that they are identifying the Bama fans from those who liked winning teams in the past. Bama like every other team has 64 players on offense and defense. 33 of them are freshmen. Many of them start. What kind of folks really believe that the coach would denigrate his players on TV? Wonder how many of them ever coached anything.
Sadly it's all about the money. They are working with their network funders to increase the network's income hoping that it rolls over to their conference's payments. When they include "automatic" bids and a guaranteed versus merely the best teams, you know it's not about football anymore. I wouldn't care if the best 12 or 14 or whatever all come from one conference. You'd get better games. Teams and conferences that don't make it would have an incentive. With that said, are there really 12 teams that realistically have a chance to win the National Championship? Just in case you didn't think it was about the money and not the sport, notice that the vast majority of the judges are athletic directors and university presidents. What is their knowledge base?
In theory, if you beat the #1, you should move up. Will they? I'd expect a split decision with the coaches saying #1 and the sports talking heads saying Texas is #1. Texas has had a very weak schedule to date, but the talking heads like them. Plenty of football to go, but I don't see anyone on Bama's schedule to be worried about so far. Maybe Tennessee, but they haven't beaten anyone that is very good yet.
I don't have a problem with the NIL per se. It's legal and maybe it's good. Challenge is for the big money players to somehow still be part of the team. Some of them actually split some of their money with the players that don't get any. The down side of the NIL are those who aren't too bright and believe verbal promises. I think there should be some control by the Universities to insure that the student isn't taken advantage of AND that all who pay the NIL money are legit folks. It's just a matter of time for the first law suit and scandal over point shaving. Watch.
So you "draft" a player with the hopes that he works out. Yet we still see players stay an extra year because it's about the team. Players that want to hone their skills on College ball instead of Pro ball. The high paid 5 stars don't always become super stars.
Florida might actually keep their coach for one more year. Florida currently has a temporary President. He will be replaced by a real President within the next 12 months. New President means there is no loyalty to the current AD. Who wants to take a job that at best means a new AD in a year? Tough situation Florida is in right now.
The kids fought their hearts out. And yet once again, the SEC refs decided the game. We're supposed to be the best conference. We make lots of money. There is no excuse for not having the best refs in the game.
Better how? Bennett like too many GA quarterbacks are game managers, not leaders. Tua led the team. Bennett was on the team.
I don't understand why Ewers played the whole game. Texas is Ewers. He has been injured and missed a lot of games in the past. This game was won before halftime. Unless someone wants to build his numbers for the Heisman, Texas should have played Manning.
Kelly was a bad fit for LSU and the SEC from the beginning. His success at Notre Dame was based on Notre Dame playing whoever it wants and a culture in America of "love" for Notre Dame. Yesterday's game gave me flashbacks to Les Miles near the end, with the 100 yard stare on the sidelines wondering what to do next.
Go Vandy! Against the ACC no less!
Finebaum as usual is focused on stirring up some BS. I don't have any problem with the Saban naming. Denny Field was named for the guy who got us a big stadium in the beginning. Part of Alabama's history. History that celebrates that football needs more than just the team on the ground, it takes support from the University, fans and boosters. Adding the Bear was a good it, but then the Bear and Denny shared it. Saban doesn't share the naming now. In fact it's recognition of his success on the field, not on the building.
Automatic bids are an incredibly bad idea from a pure football standpoint, but good from a financial standpoint for the networks and athletic directors. Ideally they would come up with some sort of system to figure out the top 12 based less on records and more on strength of schedule and performance. Arbitrary poll rankings are dumb. I wouldn't care if all of the 12 came out of any one conference.
DeBoer will be judged in Seasons one and two less by if Bama makes the playoffs and more by what the team looks like on the field. Win or lose, I hope to see quality football. Don't forget folks that Sark was 5-7 at Texas in year one and folks wanted him hung. 8-5 in year two. Now everyone wants to anoint him as a "god". Heck Saban's first year was a lose to Auburn and a 6-6 regular season record. I predict 10 wins.
He's correct. Players come to schools for lots of reasons. Some come for the coaches. Some come for the NIL money. Some come for the culture of the school. Some come for the value of the school's diploma. Some (a small number) come for NFL hopes. Every kid is different. New coaches can be a factor in all of the above. I proud of the majority that stayed.
"Patience" has many definitions. Is it possible that the fans turn on DeBoer? He's safe in year one regardless of record as long as the team produces a good looking product that doesn't lose in a humiliating manner. Year two would have to show some significant progress. Maybe allow for two losses and a top ten ranking. Expectations in year three will be for a run at the national championship.
Are all the GA fans fair weather fans? In the State of Alabama, we're fans no matter what. Look at Auburn. They actually are increasing the size of their stadium because it's always sold out. Bama fans are fans of Bama. Yeh, we like it when they win, but real fans remain fans even when they lose.
The old guy was great. The old guy is gone. Time for everyone including fans and the sports talking heads to move on. There will never be another Saban. College football will move on to maybe 6-8 above average teams every year with the other 4-6 having a great year. The talking heads are hating this because they will actively have to work hard at their jobs now. As a Bama fan, I will remember the Saban years forever. Kind of like the Chicago Bulls after Jordan retired. Real fans relish the memories and still support their team. Bama will move on.
I hope the players haven't forgotten about rat poison. Folks are spreading poison like it's free. Hey team, we lost to Texas last season. His team beat Texas. He can't be all bad.
Great speech. Has the right ideas and beliefs. Can he do it? I hope so. Look at what he did was 3 stars.
Bama will win the naty this year. Folks like to comment on recruiting and developing, but one of the greatest strengths Saban had was controlling the boosters and other "power brokers". If Saban helps DeBoer navigate this, it will be a big plus. We didn't beat Texas last season, but DeBoer did. Heck he's beaten Sark and Texas twice. Everyone wanted Lanning. He's beaten Lanning and Oregon three times. We all talk about recruiting, but navigating the NIL is the big deal in recruiting these days.
He's already beaten Sark and Texas. Not fair to compare him to the goat. Time to start comparing him to the other coaches in the SEC.
This guy did something that we didn't do last season....he beat Texas. Everyone wanted Lanning. This guy beat them twice this season. Norvill is a whiner. If he keeps Rees, all will be well.
Probably the best of what is out there, seeing as they won't hire Kiffin right now. If Kelly could recruit in Louisiana, he can recruit here. He'll be ok this year. Year 3 will be the big year for him. Hopefully he keeps Rees and our offensive folks. He isn't an idiot. Keeping Milroe's skills and making him better is the key. He'll have to find an SEC veteran defense staff.
