Cook has started 8 games, thrown 7 TDs. Pyne has started 1 game, thrown 3 TDs. Of course, Pyne did little coming off the bench against Auburn and had the disaster at Alabama where he threw 3 picks and looked lost. In those games of course the plan was built primarily for Cook (some might argue there did not appear to be much of a game plan at all). A hostile environment and a very serious pass rush awaits in the other Columbia. He cannot wait until the second half to get going like he did against OU. This game will tell us a lot about Drew Pyne.
These teams spent most of the game handing it to each other and neither seemed to want it. I guess you could say OU handed it to Mizzou at the end, but Mizzou handed it them first. It was incredible how the last 4 full possessions of that game were mirror images of the others. OU possession - 75 yd OU td Drive. MU possession - fumble, OU scoop and score. MU possession - 75 yd MU TD drive. OU possession - fumble, MU scoop and score. OU possession - (19 secs and time expired) About the only difference was OU's 75 yard drive took a lot of time off the clock, Mizzou's took less than a minute. On that Mizzou drive Burden and Theo Weise took over and grabbed it - nothing was handed to Mizzou on that drive.
Mizzou has no chance, so Alabama can just treat this like a 2 week bye and go ahead and prepare for LSU.
Completely agree. I have not heard anyone calling for Drink to be fired, not even the drunks around me when Auburn was leading by 2 scores. Sure, some grousing about decisions and the need to get better - but no one calling for him to go. I remember people calling for Pinkel's head after year 2, myself included. I was much younger and impatient then, now I'm old and impatient - but have a lot more perspective on what it takes at Mizzou. We aren't the kind of school (yet) that just hires the right guy and everything is perfect in 2 years.
I've read the deal was not in writing (so there was no deal). Wth was his agent doing? Shouldn't that be the agents job - making the deals and making sure all loose ends are tied up so the QB can concentrate and play football? If that is true, I hope the kid sues the heck outta his agent. Bottom feeding agents have no regard for their own clients. If it turns out it was in writing and the collective is not delivering - UNLV football has bigger problems than losing this QB.
"Missouri WR Luther Burden III, who accounted for 116 all-purpose yards and 2 touchdowns in a double-overtime win over Vanderbilt, including the game-tying TD in the first overtime. … Missouri RB Nate Noel, who ran for 199 yards on 8.3 per carry." And yet, it took 2 OTs to win this game? Mizzou has some work to do... They have to get better on 3rd down, and they have to finish drives in the red zone as it's obvious they can't depend on a RS freshman kicker to do all the scoring (regardless of how strong his leg is). At least they cleaned up the dumb penalties this week. Now if we can get 2023 Brady Cook to replace 2022 Brady Cook...
What are you talking about, there righting is to good too be true.
Ugly? Too many penalties and too many busted plays. 2 BC touchdowns were on busted plays, the other on a drive Mizzou should have been off the field but they committed a stupid penalty. A MU drive was rolling along but turned into a 2nd and 59! (due to stupid penalties). So - yes IT WAS ugly. Struggle? BC had 45 yards rushing in the first quarter - they finished the game with 49 (do the math!). Mizzou had 176 yards rushing. Passing was even (but see those 2 huge busted plays). Mizzou also had 2 takeaway and with the ball at their own 15 and 45 seconds left they nabbed 3 points at the end of the first half (btw, that kick had the distance to be good from 65+). So no, it was NOT a struggle. Make no mistake - when we are in a game that is a struggle - and we play that ugly - it will not be a good outcome.
Good for Barry Odom, good for UNLV, and good for the rest of the world that the beakers lost a(nother) game. I hated how it went down for Barry at Mizzou as he is a very good coach, and is a genuine human being - not to mention a heckuva player during some difficult years at Mizzou. Unfortunately, the team was in decline during Pinkel's last few years, there were sanctions, and the campus wide issues at the time made recruiting top talent nearly impossible. Truth be told recruiting is not really his forte to begin with and some marquee transfers really didn't pan out - so he was not the right guy at that point in time at that University (and given the need to recruit at the highest level maybe never the right time for him as an SEC HC). But it sure is good to see him have success as I am still a big fan.
Penalty is almost always count on the one who retaliates.. but that is not the rule. The BC player grabbed Burdens mask/mouthpiece first, and did so right in front of the official - Burden retaliated (also right in front). I guess its ok to grab another mouthguard/facemask during a deadball, but not to throw it? We did get a break on the 2nd penalty on Burden though -that should have been unsportsmanlike, but they called it unnecessary roughness (2nd unsportsmanlike and he was gone)
except... this isn't public money. It was donated and ear-marked for this specific purpose by a private party.
I don't know if this is true or not, but I heard they had looked at lowering the field at Mizzou and the cost was so prohibitively high because the bed rock is just below the current field level.
The SEC sets the conference schedule, so there is that. Non conference scheduling can be a challenge and a lot is set in place years in advance - but really there is no excuse for a home/home with UMASS (idiots that scheduled that are gone) and it's unfortunate our "Power" conference opponent (BC) is not exactly a perennial power and looks to be even more down this year. Buffalo did look to be on the rise a few years ago when that was scheduled (both BC and Buffalo also set up by the aforementioned idiots). But come on man, we need to play somebody outside the SEC! Oh well, nothing you can do about the schedule at this point other than beat the teams on it.
Agree - I certainly wouldn't bet against him given his track record.
that was supposed to say Sold Out DOES NOT EQUAL Filled Stadium (apparently you can't use greater than / less than symbols in these comments)
I'm glad to hear they sold the tickets, but the way ticket sales and actual attendance are recorded these days doesn't mean a lot. Sold Out Filled Stadium, especially when it will be 90+ degrees and 90% plus humidity at kickoff on a Thursday night. There will still be a lot of empty seats. I'll be there, but I anticipate having some elbow room.
In most cases I try really hard not to root against any one individual - but I'm finding myself hoping for a colossal crash for coach Prime.
He pulled his hamstring at the combine. So yeah, bad combine. Not surprised he was passed over - it's the story of his life. Also the story of his life that he perseveres and excels and proves the "experts" wrong about him. So, I wouldn't be surprised at all if he finds a way to make his mark in the NFL.
"For as much grief as the BCS received, the model itself was sound"... I have always thought this. The BCS was really good, except for the one thing it couldn't do (and no system will ever be able to do) - which is definitively identify the best 2 teams in college football. So it was set up to fail and we threw out the baby with the bathwater. I agree 8 is the right number - I don't think a legit case has ever been made that the #9 or lower team should be playing for a NC (sorry, not sorry UCF) - and 8 teams would add the games so the $ and opportunity to earn a spot is there without extending the season too much.
by the time I caught up DeBoer is the man. And of course he was their first choice all along.
I don't think this was about money, as the money was close enough I think Mizzou could have come up. Professionally, it's risk / reward. Had he stayed in COMO, with the pieces in place and momentum, likely have a good year and find himself looking at HC offers. Or, take a little more risk, go to LSU to turn that D around (and there is talent there so I won't be surprised if he does) - which will also open up HC jobs. I think the difference is (as someone mentioned in earlier comment) the caliber of HC offer is likely to be different. Coordinators don't often go to power conferences for their first HC job, unless they are coming from a "blue blood". So this move positions him for a better HC job. Regarding his La ties, that's nice to talk about but I really don't think that factors in as much as you might think. If you are making 2M a year, you can keep a home in both places if that's what she wants.
Gotta get those clicks... and here I am clicking away.
MUTiger - Drink was hired by Sterk. Gates was hired by Reed-Francois, but your point is a good one. It takes a lot more than just a great head coach (although that is far and away the most important thing). The AD (and department) either has to be on board and help or get the heck out of the way.
Ole Miss is inching closer?? They were 11th this year - starting next year that is more than close, that is in... With the success they have had in txfr portal so far, no reason they aren't in the mix.
"Missouri gave the ball to RB Cody Schrader, its most dynamic option on offense, 33.5% of the time (269 touches, 22.4 per game). Etienne averaged 6.08 yards per touch; Schrader averaged 6.24. Etienne is in the transfer portal; Schrader is All-SEC." I hope Trevor reads this...
Because Mizzou is not overrated, and saying anything is biased in favor of Mizzou is ludicrous.
Congrats to Ole Miss. It is right that they got a NY6 bid. And, it didn't even require them to tear down another SEC school to get it (although plenty of Rebels fans have been trying that plenty this past week).
Getting a little tired of the "we want to get the calls right" rhetoric when they don't even look at the most critical calls, or they make assumptions when they do review and claim it is indisputable. Replay officials miss as much or more with replay than the refs on the field...and that's saying something.
I don't know if it is that they are young or what, but love that Mizzou has these two guys leading the big revenue sports. They seem to get the importance of engaging across the athletic dept and with the students and fans. Drink last year passed out pizza to Students in line for a BB game, Gates frequently (weekly) puts out an update on Mizzou sports.
