3 takeaways from Missouri's wild win over Oklahoma
Missouri defeated Oklahoma 30-23 on Saturday night in Columbia.
The Tigers pulled off the come-from-behind win despite not having starting QB Brady Cook available due to injury. Drew Pyne had an up-and-down night in his place, but the Tigers were opportunistic offensively and played excellent defense in their win over the former Big 12 foes.
Here are 3 takeaways from Mizzou’s win:
Wild last few minutes
This game had arguably the craziest finish of any college football game so far in 2024.
Oklahoma trailed 16-9 with a little over 3 minutes remaining in the game. The Sooners then tied the game with a touchdown pass from running back Taylor Tatum to quarterback Jackson Arnold.
A few plays later, Oklahoma safety Billy Bowman returned a fumble for a touchdown to give OU its biggest lead of the game. The Sooners appeared to be in the driver’s seat, but the game was far finished.
Missouri drove right down the field to tie the game. Pyne found Theo Wease for his second touchdown catch of the night with 1:03 left on the clock. On OU’s ensuing possession, Arnold fumbled the ball right back to Mizzou — who scored the go-ahead and eventual game-winning touchdown. In total, the teams combined to score 4 touchdowns in 3:18 after managing just 1 touchdown over the previous 56:42 of the game.
Missouri’s defense was lights-out
Mizzou’s defense deserves credit for keeping Oklahoma in-check. The Sooners have been poor offensively all season, but the Tigers did well on Saturday night to defend their home turf.
Oklahoma’s offense averaged just 4 yards per play. More importantly, Mizzou forced 5 Oklahoma fumbles and recovered 4 of them. The Tigers converted those 4 turnovers into 13 points, which proved to be the difference in the game.
Mizzou also held Oklahoma to just 5-of-15 on third down, which prevented the Sooners from establishing any momentum offensively.
Where does Mizzou go from here?
Missouri struggled offensively for much of the night, but the Tigers did enough to win this game and extend hope of reaching the College Football Playoff.
The Tigers are now 7-2 on the season and still have an outside chance of reaching the 12-team field if they can win out for the rest of the regular season. But even if that doesn’t happen for Mizzou, this win ensures the Tigers have a shot at winning 10 regular-season games for the second consecutive year under Eli Drinkwitz.
Missouri will travel to face South Carolina next weekend on the road.
Where does Mizzoo go from here? LOL.
We go to South Carolina…who we’ve beaten 5 straight games.
Birmingham Bowl?
Well, Mizzou is undefeated in Birmingham. Beat Bama 20-7 in 1975 and won the Hall of Fame Bowl over SCarolina 26-13 in 1979.
Last year they got sent to almost shut out Ohio State and it dumbfounded the sports news media for an entire year. Now, Magically, the media has Ohio State leap- frogging Missouri ……. What does karma say about speaking out of school facts?
Give us a break; we’ve been without Brady Cook and we’re still 7-2. Drew Pyne finally figured it out in the last quarter. Whew.
Oklahoma thought they could just fly up to Columbia, eat at Burger King, and Bob Stoops and some criminals would meet them. For a while Pyne acted like he was afraid of looking like himself… then suddenly he started looking like himself polished up like a Super Bowl ring. Very interesting game and very changeable from possession to possession!!!!! Wow
What an incredibly underwhelming recap for one of the most exciting final 3 minutes in the SEC this season.
Come on man… it’s SDS. They’re too busy writing stuff about the ACC and even the B10 to worry about All the SEC. If you’re not one of the top 4 teams in the conference, then good luck with coverage. I think they have slighted Vandy all season. Good luck with the rest of the season.
I wonder if Cook was really injured all year. That would help explain his decline from last year.
Interesting look ahead with that huge word “IF”
UGa beats UTV, both are 6-2 with UGa holding tiebreaker over UTA and UTV but loses out to Bama and OM
UTV holds tiebreaker over Bama but loses out to UGa
Bama wins out, 6-2 holding tiebreaker over UGa LSU but loses out to UTV who loses out to UGa who loses out to Bama but beats out UTV …
MIZ wins out tiebreaker loss to Bama and aTm, no path forward
LSU wins out holds tiebreaker over OM but loses to Bama and aTm
OM wins out holds edge over UGa but loses to LSU
UTA and aTm play each other so at least one of these teams will have at least 2 losses as well. UGa has to hope aTm beats UTA, LSU has to hope UTA wins over aTm, OM has to hope LSU loses a 3rd SEC game, UTV has to beat UGa to control their path, Bama has to hope UTV beats UGa and is the only 1 SEC loss team in order to win multiple tiebreakers and get a SECCG rematch, which means if UTA beats aTm they will need to lose Ky or Ark.
Wow, talk about carnage…
I’ll say it again, best case scenario is UGa wins out, loses SECCG tiebreaker scenario to OM and Bama, sits at home as an 8th seed and first round CFP host…and watch an entertaining and meaningless SEC champ get beat up in time for the playoffs
Sorry, posted on wrong article. Heck of a comeback, go M I Z…
the path forward for Mizzou is pretty simple, win out and let the rest take care of itself.
not making the playoffs will be disappointing but back to back 10 win+ seasons aren’t a catastrophe.
We won 10 games in 2010 and got F’d during bowl season. aTm, a team we beat, went to the Sugar bowl with an 8-4 record, while we went to the Insight bowl. Not all 10 win seasons are alike.
