Kirk Herbstreit cautions Texas to 'be careful' with Vanderbilt
Kirk Herbstreit and Nick Saban both picked Vanderbilt +17.5 as their super dogs of the week on ESPN’s College GameDay show. The Commodores, having already knocked off 1 top-5 SEC opponent at home this season, will be looking to stun Texas on Saturday and reach bowl eligibility before the calendar flips to November.
Texas is coming off a disheartening 30-15 home loss to Georgia last weekend — its first defeat of the season. Saban said Saturday morning after a loss, he would always try to impress upon his team it was more about what they did wrong and what they could improve.
“I would be very technical in showing our team, ‘This is why we didn’t have success,'” the former Alabama coach said. “It was really about what we controlled and what we did.”
Herbstreit issued a word of caution to the Longhorns, though.
“It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a regular season game [the Georgia game] have that kind of energy, and it’s just human nature that next week, at Vandy, construction’s going on, no matter what the coaches say, it’s human nature to let your foot off the gas,” he said.
“And that’s the challenge today for Sark. This isn’t old Vandy. It’s not just Diego Pavia. These guys are going to show up believing they can win because of what they did against Alabama. So, this is going to be a psychological game. But if Texas shows up and they’re ready to go, they’ll be more physical and they’ll run the football and they’ll win. But be careful.”

Texas is 6-1 on the season, ranked No. 5 in the country, and still very much in the thick of the SEC Championship picture. But Texas is also 1 of 7 teams with just a single loss in league play at this point in the season. A loss to Vanderbilt would be damaging.
Kickoff is set for 4:15 p.m. ET on SEC Network. The Longhorns are a 17-point favorite (ESPN Bet) ahead of kickoff.
