3 takeaways from Vanderbilt's bowl-clinching victory over Auburn
Vanderbilt football is officially going bowling!
The Commodores clinched bowl eligibility with a strong road win over Auburn Saturday afternoon. Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia didn’t have his best outing of the season, but he was able to do just enough to lead his team to a 17-7 win in Week 10.
Vanderbilt now looks to keep stacking wins with an upcoming battle against South Carolina in Nashville. In the meantime, here are 3 takeaways from Vanderbilt’s gritty win over the Tigers.
Diego Pavia completely owns Hugh Freeze
As stated above, Diego Pavia had far from his best performance on Saturday. However, he was able to do just enough to clinch the Commodores’ 6th win of the year.
Pavia completed just a few passes in the second half after starting the game very well. Despite this, Pavia led Vanderbilt down the field to score a touchdown with just over 5 minutes remaining, a drive that lasted just under 9 minutes across 14 plays. The score put Vanderbilt up 17-7 and ate up most of the 4th quarter.
Here’s a look at Pavia’s score to all but seal it:

Pavia threw for a touchdown earlier in the game, finding AJ Newberry for a 28-yard score. The New Mexico State transfer was under some intense pressure and off platform while delivering this beauty:

Pavia finished 9-22 for 143 yards and 2 touchdowns with 26 rushing yards. And with that, Pavia will finish his college career 3-0 against Hugh Freeze.
Vanderbilt football: Going Bowling!
And with that, the Commodores are going bowling for the first time since 2018, looking to collect their first bowl win since 2014’s Compass Bowl victory over Houston.
The Commodores finish the season with a tough stretch, but they have a chance to post their first season above .500 since 2013, when they finished 9-4 under James Franklin. They face a sneaky tough South Carolina squad at home next weekend before finishing the year at LSU and vs. Tennessee in Nashville.
Now, the Commodores have danced with every team they’ve played this season. They had Texas on the ropes and of course upset Alabama earlier in the year. And in their battle at Mizzou they fell by just 3 points. Because of that, it’d be unwise to count Vanderbilt out against either the Tigers or Volunteers.
Commodores defense put heavy pressure on Payton Thorne, Tigers offense
Vanderbilt’s defense was lights-out on Saturday against, admittedly, a bad Tigers offense.
The Commodores got to QB Payton Thorne 3 times and totaled 7 tackles for loss. Vanderbilt’s defensive line was all over Auburn’s from the jump and held an offense that was totaling 178 yards per game on the ground to just 100 rushing yards. Most notably, Auburn was a dismal 4-15 on 3rd and 4th down combined.
Randy Fontenette was Vanderbilt’s top performer on defense. He totaled 4 tackles with 2.5 tackles for loss. Six separate Vanderbilt defenders contributed on a tackle for loss Saturday.
Fittingly, Vanderbilt ended the game with a fumble recovery, stripping Auburn TE Rivaldo Fairweather.
Fire Hugh Freeze. End the football program.
Rue.
I own you.
Yep. Fire him and lose at least half of the 2025 class and a lot more in the portal.
Vandy, with far less talent, came into JH stadium and won. Vandy, with far less talent, beat Alabama.
I’d taking great coaching ANY day of the week over what AU currently has.
This was the same coach vandy had last year, difference this year is more talent on the team
If he cared about the Universe, he would have retired long ago…in a far…
AU’s defense has played winning football several times this season and they still lost. You have to feel for them.
No, no you don’t. This is all on a head coach that has no idea what he’s doing.
No I don’t.
The disrespect for Vandy is real. +8 against Auburn and win by 10??!! Holding Auburn to 7 points at home?? If South Carolina is favored next week, take Vandy!! They are 7-2 vs the spread this year. Clark Lea should get SEC COY and National COY. The turn around is unlike any other with the talent he has on the field vs other SEC teams. Build Pavia a statue tomorrow because we are going Bowling!! Anchor Down!!
Congrats.
Agreed Coach Lea deserves it this season, incredible job
“The disrespect for Vandy is real.”
Most AU fans/grads I know picked Vandy to win. In fact, you can go back a few days ago to see my prediction where I picked Vandy to beat AU by 20+ points.
Most AU fans/grads you know?
You mean they ALL aren’t grads? I’ll be darned…who would’ve thunk it…
Oh, and here I’d thought you’d changed due to the hurricane destroying your single wide.
What does that have to do with your differentiation of AU fans vs AU grads? I thought you were dead set that the only fans of a program who have the right to express an opinion has to be a grad of said program. What changed?
And look, two posts in a row to you without a single name calling. New perspective is a wonderful thing.
I’m not seeing a better candidate for SEC Coach of the Year. Let’s see if you can keep the staff together going forward. Gonna be some HC vacancies after December, inside the SEC and outside.
“MSU hasn’t had 4 straight losing seasons, genius.”
That’s pretty much a fact. Teams that are traditionally not so great (no offense meant) generally don’t get the respect they deserve when they are actually good. If I wasn’t so cheap I’d have put money on Vandy today. Congrats.
Need an edit button. Pasted the wrong quote.
Quote should’ve been “The disrespect for Vandy is real”.
Congrats, Vandy. That was fun.
No one thought Auburn would win this game. But it was closer than I had thought it would be.
Yeah, I mean AU could have given up 40 points to Vandy like Bama did.
Yeah, and they could have scored 35 and won this game going away.
Bama will still have a better record than you barners. Now go out your TP up for the year and STFU. And go find another coach. You’ve got more coaching changes than Kamala has lies.
“Now go out your TP up for the year and STFU. And go find another coach. You’ve got more coaching changes than Kamala has lies.”
Lay off the meth, she/her. Saban isn’t coming back to save you.
Big congrats to vandy.. what a great Season in Nashville !
Congrats to Vandy on their win. It should be a fun game when UT comes to Nashville.
Few teams have fun playing Vandy, whether they win or lose.
We have now officially replaced Vandy as the perennial cellar dweller for the SEC
MSU
MSU hasn’t had 4 straight losing seasons, genius.
“MSU hasn’t had 4 straight losing seasons, genius”
Jeff Lebby says “Hold my beer and watch this!”
Yet.
“Jeff Lebby says “Hold my beer and watch this!””
He has three more losing seasons to go!
“He has three more losing seasons to go!”
Not in order for MSU to have 4 losing seasons in a row. We are at 2 in a row now. Obviously not putting all of that on Lebby. He will do ok if he can get a defense, I think. I’ll let you crown AU the worst in the SEC if you want. Not a title I’m fighting for.
Congratulations to Vandy! They gave us all we could handle at Mizzou. Lucky to have pulled out a W against them. Great coaching job by Coach Lea!
Congratulations to Vandy and their fans. This is a brutal season to be an AU fan.
It’s been brutal since Gus was fired.
Ron is sad and angry
crazybabywho re is retarded.
I can’t believe Auburn has sank so low.
If that dummy hadn’t hurdled the line on the field goal attempt Auburn is only down six with a few minutes to play. That was the game killer, they got first and goal and got up by ten, Auburn isn’t built to come back two scores
Vandy could probably beat UGA or The Ohio State any given Sunday.
Welcome to NFL 2.0
SHOW THEM THE MONEY!!!
Will be funny when SC beat aTm.
So SC beat aTm.
Life goes on.
Go Cocks!!!
Even if Vandy loses the rest of their games, Lea should easily win coach of the year (as horrible as the Vols look after the first half, Vandy would beat this first half version of the Vols). For Auburn, I thought Harsin was a thinking outside the box hire. Freeze has a worse record than Harsin did. It will be interesting to see how they justify keeping him, though I think they may give him one more year. This does show that in the NIL era, you have to invest in a decent QB. Freeze decided to stand pat.
Auburn chose to die on that ant hill for QBs.
YellaWood got a lota $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
They gonna fire Freeze now or buy a 10M QB?
QB?
10M QB if they can get it.
Worked before…
Can someone tell me what Coach Freeze is good at? I haven’t paid much attention to him over the years so I don’t know much about him.
“Can someone tell me what Coach Freeze is good at?”
Excuses. He’s good at coming up with excuses.
I love this narrative around Vandy this season. Unless your team is playing vandy, does anyone not pull for them to get another win? You’ll hear comments for other teams like “i don’t care if (insert team) wins, I really just want (insert other team) to lose. I’ve never once heard that said about vandy. Everyone rooting for them to win and I’m here for it. Go Commodores! Keep on winning, until you play us!
