Warde Manuel dissects separation between Georgia, Miami in latest CFP rankings
Warde Manuel had plenty to say about Georgia and Miami in the aftermath of the 2nd College Football Playoff rankings that were released on Tuesday night.
Both teams fell short on the road in Week 11, with jubilant home fans storming the field and ripping down goalposts to prove their demise, and of course, both teams plummeted in the new CFP rankings.
Manuel, the CFP selection committee chairman, was asked during a teleconference after the new rankings were released why Georgia and Miami ended up in their respective spots. The Hurricanes fell 5 spots to No. 9 after losing at Georgia Tech but are still ahead of the Bulldogs who fell 9 spots to No. 12 after getting beat at Ole Miss.
“Well, the obvious is the first loss for Miami and the second loss for Georgia. That obviously played a factor into it,” said Manuel. “Georgia Tech is coming on. They now have both their quarterbacks playing in the game. (Miami was) on the road. Georgia’s losses were both on the road, as well.
“So, it came down to factoring in those games, a close game that Miami lost to Georgia Tech and then a decisive win by Ole Miss. So, we just factored everything in and took a look at the competitiveness. Both teams are very good from our perspective but based on the season as well as what they did last week, that’s how we made the judgment of how they fell.”
The Bulldogs will have a chance to bounce back immediately and impress the committee on Saturday night when they host Tennessee at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC.
“Georgia, obviously, with two losses, having lost both to Alabama and to Ole Miss, both with two losses, they’re obviously in the mind of (the) committee, Alabama and Ole Miss were going to be ahead of Georgia because of the head-to-head and the similar record,” explained Manuel.
“Georgia Tech is coming on.”
GT has a whole lot more “coming on” before they present the same challenge as playing either Bama or Ole Miss on the road. UGA has defeated multiple teams that are clearly better than GT – Texas, Clemson, etc.
Why didn’t Manuel just call it like it is – UGA’s offense is dysfunctional and until UGA gets their offense back on track they are not CFP worthy.
