The second College Football Playoff rankings of the 2024 season were revealed on Tuesday night.

For the first time, the CFP is expanding to 12 teams this season. Because of the way the format is structured, the official bracket will not necessarily mirror the final CFP rankings. That’s because the 5 highest-ranked conference champs all earn automatic bids regardless of the rankings. Additionally, the 4 highest-ranked conference champions will all receive first-round byes.

Those quirks will likely create inconsistencies between what the selection committee rankings look like when compared to the projected CFP bracket on a week-to-week basis. For example, Boise State was ranked 13th by the committee on Tuesday evening, but the Broncos snagged the No. 12 seed by virtue of being one of the 5 highest-ranked conference champions.

First-round matchups are slated to take place on campus sites, which means Ohio State, Penn State, Indiana and Tennessee are all projected to host Playoff games this year.

The SEC and Big Ten each earned 4 teams in the projected field on Tuesday night. Another SEC team, Georgia, was the first program to miss out on being included in the 12-team field. The other 4 spots in the field were taken up by Notre Dame, Boise State, Miami and BYU.

The next College Football Playoff rankings will be unveiled on Tuesday, Nov. 19, following Week 12 action.
