College GameDay airs touching tribute to Kirk Herbstreit's dog, Ben: 'America's Best Friend'
Anyone who has lost a pet knows what College GameDay host Kirk Herbstreit is going through this week.
His beloved dog Ben, who captured the hearts of college football fans around the country with his multiple appearances at games and College Gameday, passed away this past week after a battle with cancer, according to Herbstreit.
On Saturday, College GameDay ran a touching 2-minute tribute for Ben and Herbstreit. Check it out below:
Thank you again for all the outpouring of love for our Ben. I can’t tell you how much it means to me and my family.

Ben was well-known across the college football landscape. He made several appearances on College GameDay, and was a regular in the broadcast booth with Herbstreit during his Saturday calls. As Herbstreit mentions in the above video, the Rose Bowl even gave Ben an important distinction – “Chief Happiness Officer.”
Those of us who have had pets pass on can appreciate this tribute especially. They really are members of our family, and as Ben has shown, can have a massive impact on others as well. Rest in Peace, Ben.

Surely you meant ‘broadcast boof’.
I’ll miss ya, Ben.
A dog is a pet with some folks, and that’s fine. Then there are us, where our dogs are family members. Losing a dog that is part of the family is heartbreaking. Goldens have such gentle souls; all they want to do is please. It’s easy to see how much Kirk loved this dog. I’ve been right there more than once. I am not ashamed to say that it brings tears to my eyes. Praying for the family, and especially Kirk, just breaks my heart.
Good boy Ben! All dogs go to heaven, safe travels and Godspeed!
