If Mark Stoops beats Florida again, the SEC's longest coaching marriage has to continue, right?
If you’re old enough, the strains of Frank Sinatra’s “Love and Marriage” conjure up one thing. No, I don’t mind for octogenarians who remember Old Blue Eyes, I mean for TV viewers of the 1990s (or later, for those who love reruns). TV’s Married With Children was the saga of Al Bundy and his wife, Peggy. Sinatra’s tune was an obvious joke, because while the marriage of Al and Peggy continued, the love was … well … questionable. Al and Peggy were both well past their respective primes held together by inertia as much as love.
Strangely, Kentucky football has its own Bundy-esque situation these days.
There was a time when a pair of 10-win seasons in Lexington would put a coach solidly into legendary status. (They renamed a street for Hal Mumme after a 2-1 start in 1997, for goodness’ sake). There was a time when a streak of 8 consecutive seasons of bowl appearances would be cause for couch burning, not coach burning.
But here they are, the SEC’s longest tenured head football coach and a fan base that is growing increasingly impatient with impotent offense, head-scratching losses, and 7-5 seasons that are softer than premium toilet paper. If Mark Stoops sat down on the sofa and jammed his hand into his pants like Al Bundy, the comparison couldn’t be more ripe.
Here’s the thing, though. For all of Kentucky’s fan grievances (and there are some, and they are pretty solid), Saturday presents an opportunity for an occasion of wonder. A Kentucky coach who has suddenly owned Florida.
If you think that’s a small thing, they maybe you missed 1987 to 2018, a span of 31 years … and 31 Florida victories. That streak ran from before Florida was elite until the height of the Spurrier years, through the following decline, back up into the Meyer years, and back through the mediocrity that followed. Sure, sometimes Florida was great. Sometimes, they were fairly awful. But they always beat Kentucky. Sometimes it was 72-7 or 65-0. Sometimes, Florida had to overcome a 21-3 4th-quarter deficit or win despite throwing seven interceptions. But they did.
Stoops ended that streak in 2018 and is 3-2 against Florida since. In fact, he’s won 3 in a row and has a chance for 4 in a row over Florida on Saturday. The last coach at Kentucky to win 4 games in a row over Florida? That’d be Bear Bryant. The last to win 5? Has never happened.
In a microcosm, the Florida streak sums up Stoops’ situation. Yes, Florida has been miserable. But they had been miserable before and had beaten Kentucky into submission. Yes, the past 2 years with wins over Florida still ended up as 7-6 seasons. (Was there ever a time when Kentucky fans thought they could beat Florida and go to a bowl and be unsatisfied?)
But if Stoops beats Florida 4 times in a row — and in Gainesville in 3 of his past 4 visits — how can Big Blue Nation turn him away?
Again, the reasons to be dissatisfied are there. The offense is archaic and brutal. Losses to Vanderbilt and South Carolina seem to suggest that maybe the Gators’ standing vis-a-vis other SEC schools has flipped. Stoops’ continued tone-deaf comments about NIL and battles with the basketball program aren’t earning any brownie points, either.
But at a program known (if for anything) for irrelevance, Stoops has a chance to add another notch to the growing list of achievements he has amassed with Kentucky football.
Maybe he’ll stick around. Maybe it’ll be a little bit begrudging on both sides. It’s a marriage that might not be long on love. But if the Wildcats beat Florida, it’s probably still a marriage.
Never saw Married with Children.
That’s not the only thing I didn’t see.
Right here. I’m late. 10AM tee time…foul
Maybe opening your eyes, maybe paying better attention, maybe then you can see things
Don’t overvalue a Kentucky win over the Jort Nation. The Florida program of gridiron dominance was a generation ago.
Florida is definitely not the Florida of years past for sure.
The marriage will go on win or lose because we cannot afford the 40+ million dollar buy out even though he is losing the fan base faster than Calipari after a first round NCAA tourney exit.
Best coach since The Bear and fans turn against him?
Sometimes you realize what you have until they are gone. Sometimes you do and are glad they are gone. If you are the latter, you better hope they hire someone as good. Ky is a tough place to coach football. They have little successful history to attract recruits, their state produces few players of the P-4 level. It is not an easy place to win, much less win big.
I don’t really disagree, but sometimes both sides just don’t appreciate what the other brings to the table anymore. That’s the point we are at Stoops. The talent is being brought in (thanks to him and his staff, but there’s no reason that couldn’t continue), the results are just too inconsistent. I think Stoops saw this too, which is why he tried to head to A&M.
The other point to note is that there is an obvious candidate available, who was even on the staff and a large part of Stoops’ last good team. He’s done very well in three years as a head coach, but he might not be available much longer. Get him now, or be stuck without a good option when the end inevitably comes.
Really Troy is 1-5… come on man.. get serious
He’s not at Troy any more. He’s the HC at Tulane.
No one is bragging about beating Billy Napier. It’s like bragging about taking a dump.
now that’s funny
As a Gator fan – right on!
It’s the play calling. He’s got the most talented skill players he’s ever had at WR and TE and he still wants to run the ball on second and long. He still wants to run the ball on 3rd and goal from the 5 when he had UGA on the ropes. Even the OLine is better than what has been stated and it’s because they are so predictable on offense.
I keep asking people, If not Stoops then who? Barnhart is not going to throw Stoops out unless there is substantial chance of showing better records in the years forward. What big time coach is going to come to KY and bring a war chest of NIL money with him? Barnhart is certainly not going to put $8 Million a year on a pig-in-a-poke. Lastly, the Stoops buyout alone is almost as big is the State of Kentucky operating budget.
That last line….lol, lol, LOL.
I get the fans frustration. He has wasted too many good to great defenses with his inability to field a competent offense.
Too many of his “7 – 5” seasons are with the team underachieving.
It will be odd not seeing him on the sidelines but the vast majority of coaches move on at some point unless they are sitting on top of the dynasty (saban at bama).
I took flo to win this game. I believe some gator fans will kidnap billy before the game and avoid all those coaching blunders he inevitably makes and flo will pull it out.
I have been convinced kiffin will be the choice for the gators when billy is fired but stoops might be a better fit than I first thought IF, and its a big IF, he can stay away from the offense, get a good OC and let him run the offense the way he wants. Howevuh I also wonder if stoops isnt over all the NIL and portal business and ready to step away when the season is done. if you dont embrace the NIL and portal you are toast. Florida has the potential NIL money that ky doesnt and you can recruit in just a few flo zip codes to a large extent.
Insanity to think FL fans will tolerate Stoops hiring. They put up with a lot of mess, but this would put them over the top.
Texas A&M got lucky to avoid hiring Stoops.
Stoops turne A&M down… I saw the actual contract myself with Mark..He kept his mouth shut while A&M went on social media pretending to reject him. Mark has too much class to go public with all that but I saw it all with my own eyes, FYI
Florida football’s 4-star DL commit lines up 6 official visits
It’s starting and won’t end Lagway will leave as well along with a host of others
Was wondering where you have been fake life .. always great to see your sense of optimism. Hopefully the power in that Tallahassee trailer park is not having any issues for you .
He must be too busy trying to catch some prey in the lake.
I am a Florida Gator fan – we want a divorce from this guy – silly billy!
You do know that if you select the G8r avatar for your catchy screen name you won’t have to tell us you are a gator fan. BTW with a name like snuffyg8r we kind of figured that part out anyway. Welcome to SDS
So if UK beats UF then Stoop stays and Napier leaves?
You and the short version, always in a hurry, palley.
Yup, bout sums it up
It’s hard to see Stoops getting a promotion anywhere, especially after the A&M booster revolt last year. Maybe Indiana hires him after Cignetti leaves for the Gators this offseason.
You don’t know what you’re talking about..Stoops said no to A&M, period.
A&M had to save face and Stoops kept his mouth shut because he is a class act. I saw the contract with my own eyes..
We’ve not had a good season but we have a great coach for our program. F**** off
John Schlarman RIP was the heart and soul of the Wildcats and the Big Blue Wall. He has proved to be irreplaceable.. Hopefully we will find another person that embodies the BBN like Coach Schlarman. If you want to know why we have taken a step backward, it is because of his untimely death. We will find another to lead us, but unless you knew John, you cannot understnd the loss we had and that still affects us to this day.
And we still support and believe in Coach Stoops 100%, period..
I am curious if you can state the State of Kentucky’s annual budget compared to Stoops buyout.
Rjhon???
It’s about time for Stoops to give up his defensive expertise and focus and learn offense. Offense wins games in today’s CFB environment.
I think it’s time for Ky to depart from stoops and move in a new direction. Stoops is always giving the same excuses ea game and never fixes the problems. Ky is back in the cellar of the SEC. Ky is definitely the most undiscipline team in the SEC it seems like that for the last 3-5 years. Stoops is poop
